REQUIRED TEXTS
Imaginative Realism: How To Paint What Doesn'T Exist (James Gurney Art) The Art of Animal Drawing: Construction, Action Analysis, Caricature
REQUIRED MATERIALS
9x12 Hardbound sketchbook, for this class only. Grumbacher Multi Media In & Out Pages is recommended. Various Sketch materials; Pencils, colored Pencils, Pen and Ink, Gouache, Water Color, Markers, etc. A Cintiq Pen is a must, since most of this class will be taught as a digital rendering class.
FILE AND FOLDER SETUP
Please copy the folder named "ILLU 160" in our class Materials Folder, located within the class Dropbox folder and paste within your personal classroom folder. Instructor will help guide you through this process.
GRADING
My grading protocol is based on the process of learning. Each project and exercise is due on the date assigned but you will be allowed to revisit, revise for a higher grade up and until the last day of class. I know that most of this material is new so you will not be expected to be at the level of a professional, BUT you are expected to try and improve your skills and work toward understanding each of the skills, principles, processes and concepts taught during the quarter. Finished projects will be graded based on the quality of finish, mastery of materials, composition, and following of instructions. Please take a look at the following charts to understand the weight of each exercise and project in regards to your final grade.
EXAMPLE: For exercises; each assignment will be graded by percentage of completion. If for example you only complete 76 of the 100 body parts, that will be your grade, "76".
For Assignments; If each assignment for anatomy or Perspective is Correct, but only in line, the highest grade it will receive is a "C". If each Assignment is correct, and rendered in value correctly, the highest grade it will receive is a "B". If each Assignment is correct, and rendered in value correctly, and rendered to a finished degree with good compositional placements, and presents well, the highest grade it will receive is an "A". Professionalism is stressed even at this level of education; meaning the closer to "Perfection" or a better definition would be "Completeness" the higher the grade. This is a reflection of understanding of concepts and principles, artistic presentation and interpretation, mastery of skills and degree of finish and dedication to making each assignment the best it could be.

ABOVE: Mythic Fiction

Mythic fiction is literature that is rooted in, inspired by, or that in some way draws from the tropes, themes and symbolism of myth, legend, folklore, and fairy tales. Mythic fiction overlaps with urban fantasy and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but mythic fiction also includes contemporary works in non-urban settings. Mythic fiction refers to works of contemporary literature that often cross the divide between literary and fantasy fiction.
Create an imaginary book cover, of your own choice, that utilizes the characters, elements, environments to highlight the fictitious narrative. These can be stories of your own creation or the retelling of narratives borrowed from Myth, Legend, Folklore, Fairy Tales, etc. such as; "Lord of the Rings", and includes Fandom origins such as: Art, Folk music, Harry Potter fandom, Inklings, Mythopoeic Society, Religion, Tolkien fandom, Works inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien and the World Fantasy Convention.
Examples of such literature would include aspects such as;
Creatures: Angels, Demons, Dragons, Elementals, Familiars, Faeries, Jinn, Lycanthropes, Old Ones, Sirens, Spirits, Undead, Unicorns, Yōkai
Characters: Barbarian, Caveman, Damsel in distress, Dark Lord, Heroes, Fairy godmother, Magician, Witches.
Fantasy races: Dwarves, Elves, Treants, Giants, Gnomes, Goblins, Gremlins, Halflings, Hobgoblins, Kobolds, Ogres, Oni, Orcs, Trolls
Places and events: Quests, Worlds ,Lost city, Hollow Earth, Astral plane, Enchanted forest.
Although we will work in our sketchbooks traditionally and many of our class exercises will be worked on digitally, the finished illustration will be of the artist's chosen medium, and delivered as a digital file in the vertical format of 9x12 inches with a 1/2" bleed included, so the finished image should be 10'x13" at 300 dpi saved with the appropriate naming convention, and meta data included and then placed within the correct file/folder. The image will later be placed within the finished Style guide.

Atlantis is a fictional island mentioned within an allegory by Plato. Later in his tellings through the works of Timeaus, Critias and The
Republic, the story concludes with Atlantis falling out of favor with the deities and submerging into the Atlantic Ocean. Since then the Atlantis myth has found outlets in many works of fiction and modern allegorical and utopian narratives such as Sir Francis Bacon's The New Atlantis and Sir Thomas More's Utopia, as well as entertainment venues such as the new movie Aquaman based on a DC Comic Book
We are primarily concerned with games and some of the games associated with the mythology of Atlantis include:

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a futuristic setting that tends to focus on a "combination of lowlife and high tech"[1] featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.[2]
Much of cyberpunk is rooted in the New Wave science fiction movement of the 1960s and 1970s, when writers like Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, J. G. Ballard, Philip José Farmer and Harlan Ellison examined the impact of drug culture, technology and the sexual revolution while avoiding the utopian tendencies of earlier science fiction. Released in 1984, William Gibson's influential debut novel Neuromancer would help solidify cyberpunk as a genre, drawing influence from punk subculture and early hacker culture. Other influential cyberpunk writers included Bruce Sterling and Rudy Rucker. The Japanese cyberpunk subgenre began in 1982 with the debut of Katsuhiro Otomo's manga series Akira, with its 1988 anime film adaptation later popularizing the subgenre.
Early films in the genre include Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner, one of several of Philip K. Dick's works that have been adapted into films. The films Johnny Mnemonic (1995)[3]and New Rose Hotel (1998),[4][5] both based upon short stories by William Gibson, flopped commercially and critically. The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003) were some of the most successful cyberpunk films. More recent additions to this genre of filmmaking include Blade Runner 2049 (2017), sequel to the original 1982 film, as well as Upgrade (2017), Alita: Battle Angel(2019) based on the 1990s Japanese manga Battle Angel Alita, and the 2018 Netflix TV series Altered Carbon.

IDEATION; Where and how to begin.
THUMBNAILS
The Image at left is from Norman Rockwell's book, 'Rockwell on Rockwell" describing the process by which successful images are created; from Ideation, the research and collection of models and props, to the refinement of the idea by creating roughs and color comps, to the finished illustration.
Below is an excerpt from the book, "Rockwell on Rockwell" describing the ideation stage of a painting.

Utilizing the template below, create 30 Thumbnail sketches, 10 for each Theme (Mythic Fiction Book Cover, Atlantean Adventure DVD Cover, and SCI/FI Space Quest Magazine Cover). Explore the compositional and narrative concepts of each trope and then write a 150 minimum description of your chosen Theme describing your ideas, and concepts for the proposed solutions. Please place the Thumbnails along with the written description in the EXERCISES Folder under Thumbnails.
Character Development
SILHOUETTES
Please check your Materials dropbox for a copy of the handout for a link on the development of the character through the practice of silhouettes, taken from a chapter of 3DTotal Dynamic Characters article by Darren Yeow.

|
Silhouette Student Samples
You will start the process of your Character Development through the exercise of creating at least 40 silhouettes, 20 for your Main Character and 20 for your Secondary Character. Please organise your sketches for a cohesive presentation to be used later in your Styleguide.
TURN AROUNDS
Through exploration and ideation within your sketchbook, create two finished Turnarounds; one for the main character and one for the secondary character. The finished size will be large enough to be saved as part of the Style Guide, 8.5" x 11" 300dpi. (see attached template)
1 Main Character; 1 Secondary Character.
The finished images will be graded for quality of finish, use of materials, creativity.

The finished images will be graded for quality of finish, use of materials, creativity.
Check out the link below as well as the presentation to learn and understand the importance of photographic reference to help bring the abstract artistic idea to the final finished visual form.
ENVIRONMENTS
Through exploration and ideation within your sketchbook, create 10 Value Study Thumbnails and 4 Tonal/Color Schemes that will reinforce the appropriate environment of your seated narrative. The environment should help to bring the fantasy to life by thoughtful use of color, its emotional impact, timing and setting. The finished size will be large enough to be saved as part of the Style Guide, 8.5" x 11" 300dpi. (see attached templates)
Value Studies concentrate on the simple. usually 3-4 values only, of the proposed environment/cover concept. These can be done traditionally utilizing black and white and grey markers, Gouache, pencils and/or digitally. These sketches should be done quickly as exploration for visual impact and readability. These are not finished illustrations, and although you should explore more than 10 thumbnails I am only asking for your best 10.
A really nice article about Thumbnails and the process of ideation. Click on the image below or copy and paste the link for the article.

DEVELOPING COLOR KEYS
Above is an excerpt from James Gurney's Color and Light, a must have book for every artist and illustrator on the subject of using color for dynamic picture making. The use of color is essential for the creation of mood within an image and is also useful for setting time transitions, place and environmental effects.
Take a look at the color keys and composition painted by Singaporean artist AC Masoen. His understanding of light is expressed brilliantly in these keys. Rendering is not very tight, but expression is high enough quality to get the message across. This is how powerful the fundamentals of value and light can be utilized to help convey the emotional impact that you want to impart to your viewers. COLOR, more than ANY OTHER ELEMENT of your composition has the greatest ability to evoke and emotion. Use the templates provided below to help create different color schemes and keys based on your value studies. You can ALWAYS make more, but the assignment asks tat you make at least 4 different color keys in which you explore the process of creating the "The Best" solution for your Book/Game Cover. The templates are provided as Horizontal but you will use the in the vertical format for our cover designs.
The images at left are a great example of how veteran entertainment artist with numerous film credits has explored a variety of color schemes, utilized to express different times of day, with the differing emotional responses each different approach conveys. Neither is wrong, but the more important question is; "Which one best conveys the sought for emotional response?" You, as the Illustrator, are the best equipped link in the chain of creatives working on the solution of creating a Book Cover that will grab ehe audience.
